// Crew Engineer · Grade 5
Code Crew: Grade 5
Building the ship.
The capstone of the K to 5 line. Recursion, simple algorithms, and a real program your kid designs and ships.
10 to 15 minutes a day, four or five days a week.
What kids will learn
Code Crew: Grade 5 is the Crew Engineer chapter of the Code Crew ladder. The bridge from blocks to text. Real algorithms, structured data, functions, and small programs your kid designs and ships.
- Understand recursion through a concrete visual analogy
- Convert a recursive solution to iteration (and vice versa)
- Implement binary search and reason about why it is faster than linear
- Walk through mergesort step by step on paper
- Traverse a simple tree (recursive)
- Design, implement, and test a 60 to 100 line capstone project
Sample activities
Two short looks at what a session inside Code Crew: Grade 5 actually feels like.
Sample activity, Week 6
Find a mission report inside a sorted manifest of 1024 entries. Kids try linear search (up to 1024 steps), then binary search (10 steps). The "wow" moment about big numbers and clever algorithms lands on its own.
Capstone
Pick one of three briefs: a planner, a quiz game, or a fleet-inventory tracker. Kids design it, write it (60 to 100 lines), and ship it. Includes a parent or teacher rubric for evaluating the result.
Is it the right fit?
The right next step after Grade 4 or for a curious fifth grader who has been around code for a year or two. Heavier reading and longer programs than earlier grades.
