Code Crew: Grade 3

Hands on the controls.

Loops, conditionals, variables, functions, debugging, algorithms, decomposition, and a board-game capstone.

10 to 15 minutes a day, four or five days a week.

What kids will learn

Code Crew: Grade 3 is the Crew Pilot chapter of the Code Crew ladder. Scratch-style block coding plus a kid-friendly text mode. Loops, conditionals, variables, and the first real bug-hunts.

  • Read, write, and debug 15 to 30 line programs
  • Use lists and basic data structures
  • Use conditionals and nested loops competently
  • Define functions with parameters and return values
  • Implement linear search and a simple sort
  • Plan a small program from a written brief

Sample activities

Two short looks at what a session inside Code Crew: Grade 3 actually feels like.

Capstone

Design and code a small board game: a board, a die, a player, and a win condition. Kids use every concept from the year, plus their own ideas, to ship something they can show off.

Sample activity, Week 7

A list of mission reports comes in scrambled. Kids write a sort that puts them in order by date, then a search that finds the one with the missing fuel reading. First real algorithm, first real win.

Is it the right fit?

The flagship course. Best for third graders who can read a sentence on their own. Strong second graders and curious fourth graders do well too.
