Code Crew: Mission Commander (Grade 6 and up)
Leading the mission.
A Python intro for kids who already know what a loop is. Files, modules, libraries, and projects worth showing off.
10 to 15 minutes a day, four or five days a week.
What kids will learn
Code Crew: Mission Commander (Grade 6 and up) is the Mission Commander chapter of the Code Crew ladder. A Python intro and the start of real programming: files, modules, libraries, and projects worth showing off.
- Read and write real Python files in a real editor
- Use a standard library module (datetime, random, json)
- Install and use a third-party package safely
- Read structured data from a file, transform it, write it back
- Build a small command-line tool that solves a real problem
- Use git to save snapshots of work in progress
Sample activities
Two short looks at what a session inside Code Crew: Mission Commander (Grade 6 and up) actually feels like.
Sample project, Mission 02
Read a JSON file of imaginary planet survey data, filter it by atmosphere type, and write a short markdown report. Same shape as a real data-engineering task, on training wheels.
Sample project, Mission 05
Ship a small command-line "mission planner" that prints the next three launch windows for a given target. Five files, one library import, one happy kid.
Is it the right fit?
For students who have finished the K to 5 line or who arrive with a year or two of Scratch or Code.org under their belt. Expect 25 to 40 minutes a session here, longer than the K to 5 norm.
