// Crew Recruit · Grade 1
Code Crew: Grade 1
Mission ready. Boots on the deck.
The first taste of typed instructions. Short words, big ideas, and a raven-pilot adventure that gets a little harder each week.
10 to 15 minutes a day, four or five days a week.
What kids will learn
Code Crew: Grade 1 is the Crew Recruit chapter of the Code Crew ladder. Visual block sequences and the first big ideas: order, patterns, simple if-then thinking. No reading or typing required.
- Read and follow a 4 to 6 line set of typed instructions
- Write a sequence to solve a puzzle
- Use a repeat block (introductory loops)
- Use a simple if-then (introductory conditionals)
- Find and fix bugs in a short program
- Plan a path before running it (introductory algorithmic thinking)
Sample activities
Two short looks at what a session inside Code Crew: Grade 1 actually feels like.
Sample activity, Week 3
Raven needs to land on three pads in a row. Drag four typed instructions into the correct order: TURN, MOVE, MOVE, LAND. Press run. Watch what happens, fix what does not, try again.
Sample activity, Week 8
Same launch pad, but with a fuel limit. Kids meet their first loop: REPEAT 3 TIMES { MOVE }. The cost of the program drops in half, and the idea of "say it once, run it many times" sticks.
Is it the right fit?
A natural next step after Kindergarten or a friendly first stop for any early reader. Most Grade 1 students can do it in 10 to 15 minutes a day with very little adult help.
