Algebra 2

A free online high-school Algebra 2 course for Grades 9 to 12: complex numbers, polynomial functions and division, rational and radical equations, inverse functions, exponentials and geometric series, logarithms, the function toolkit, trigonometry on the unit circle, periodic models, conditional probability and statistical inference, built around the greenhouse the crew restores for a spring Open House.

Algebra 2 is a free online high-school algebra course for Grades 9 to 12 that needs only graph paper, a tape measure, a measuring pitcher, a stopwatch, a kitchen thermometer, a protractor, string and chalk, seed trays and dried beans. Comet and Wren, the older crew, take on the Glass House, the empty greenhouse behind the community center, and restore it bench by bench for a spring Open House, and every week's algebra makes a piece of the greenhouse work: the sprinkler arc that never reaches the planter, the planter box whose volume is a cubic, seedling trays shared with a remainder, plant food mixed into a tank, a drip hose timed drop by drop, duckweed doubling across a trough, warm soil cooling at dusk, curves crossing on the chalkboard wall, the chalk circle around the sprinkler stand, the vent timer and the day's temperature wave, seed trays that sprout or do not, and seedling heights for the Open House chart. Students study a worked example, answer questions whose answers are computed and checked, and keep a Glass House Log. The course maps week by week to the Common Core high-school algebra, function, trigonometry, probability and statistics standards, states no fact about the world beyond the crew's own measurements, and ends with an Open House run for the family.

Frequently asked questions

What does it cost? +

Nothing. Algebra 2 is free from start to finish, with no card. A free parent account saves each student's progress.

What do we need at home? +

Graph paper, a tape measure, a measuring pitcher and cups, a stopwatch or kitchen timer, a kitchen thermometer, a protractor, string and chalk, a clear jug, seed trays or egg cartons, dried beans, a few coins or a spinner, index cards and a notebook. A grown-up is present for anything on a ladder or involving hot water.

Is this a full Algebra 2 course? +

It covers the Common Core high-school standards usually taught in Algebra 2: complex numbers, polynomial and rational expressions and equations, radicals and inverse functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, building and transforming functions, trigonometric functions on the unit circle, conditional probability and the rules of probability, and making inferences from data. The optional (+) standards are not included. It is not a credit-bearing or accredited course.

What should a student know first? +

Linear and quadratic functions, factoring, the quadratic formula, rational exponents, arithmetic and geometric sequences and lines of best fit (Algebra 1 Grades 9 to 12), plus right-triangle trigonometry and radians (Geometry Grades 9 to 12). The course reviews each in a worked example as it goes.

Which standards does it cover? +

The Common Core high-school standards N-CN, N-RN, A-SSE, A-APR, A-CED, A-REI, F-IF, F-BF, F-LE, F-TF, S-CP, S-ID and S-IC, listed week by week in the course.
