About this course

Geometry and Measurement Grades 6 to 8 is a free 12-week online geometry course for middle schoolers that uses only things a family already has. Students set up a Blueprint Table in a garage corner and, week by week, design and build a cardboard model clubhouse: area by cutting and composing, polygons on the grid, nets and surface area, volume, scale drawings, triangles and slices, circles, angles, slides, flips and turns, dilations and similar figures, the Pythagorean theorem, round solids and irrational numbers. Every answer is computed and checked, and the course ends with a Build Day for the family.

12-week list

Each week has short lessons Monday to Friday, a hands-on Build Lab, and a Build Day with the family on Saturday.

Week Topic Focus
1 Area by Cutting and Composing Cut a parallelogram and slide it into a rectangle
2 Polygons on the Grid The floor plan on a taped coordinate grid

5 Scale Drawings The garage at 1 cm to 50 cm
6 Triangles with Rules, and Slices Three straws: does the triangle close?
7 Circles String around a can: a little more than three diameters
8 Angles Equations for the roof frame
9 Slides, Flips and Turns Tile shapes that land on each other
