About this course

Algebra 1 Grades 9 to 12 is a free 12-week online high-school algebra course. Students join Comet and Wren in the Loft as they build a ramp course and a bottle-rocket launcher for the neighborhood Maker Fair: units and expressions, linear equations and inequalities, functions and function notation, linear graphs and rates of change, linear models and sequences, systems of equations and inequalities, rational exponents and exponential change, polynomials, factoring, quadratic equations, quadratic functions and their graphs, and scatter plots with lines of best fit.

12-week list

Each week has short lessons Monday to Friday, a Loft Lab on Wednesday, and a Loft Day with the family on Saturday.

Week Topic Focus
1 Quantities and the Shape of an Expression Units that cancel and terms that mean something
2 Equations and Inequalities in One Variable Why each step keeps the balance level
3 Functions One input, exactly one output
4 Linear Graphs and Rates of Change The cart on the ramp as a line
5 Linear Models and Sequences A rule from the paper-cup tower
6 Systems of Equations and Inequalities Where two carts meet
7 Exponents and Exponential Change Folding doubles, bouncing shrinks
8 Polynomials Tiles for the launch pad
9 Factoring Slide the tiles into a rectangle
10 Quadratic Equations When does the rocket land?
11 Quadratic Functions and Their Graphs The highest point of the flight
12 Data from the Loft and Fair Day A line through the launch data
